At the center of downtown Oklahoma City, Kerr Park is a freshly renovated public space with the potential and ambition to become the city’s shared living room. With support from a Southwest Airlines Heart of the Community grant, Downtown OKC and Project for Public Spaces developed a strategy for attracting local office workers and visitors to Kerr Park and the area’s growing residential community.
In a time of rapid change for booming Oklahoma City, locals are looking to their public spaces as vital community resources — places to gather and enjoy the heart of the city. Throughout the process, locals emphasized that it must be a place that is truly of and for the community, giving rise to the slogan “Kerr Park Your Park.” Project for Public Spaces designed and oversaw the creation of a series of exciting and unique amenities, including a pavilion, chairs, tables, games, and green play benches. These improvements have paved the way for daytime use and brought a playful spirit to the previously empty space.
